Car Camps

We hold a number of car camps each year. Car camps are where we drive to a location, set up camp, and then explore the local area by a number of short walks, or kayak/canoe trips, returning to base at the completion of each activity.

Car camps allow for “luxury” camping, where we can take most of the mod-cons (tables, chairs, stoves, gas lights, large roomy tents, coolers filled with all the goodies for gourmet eating and drinking). Some keen members have been known to set up solar showers for hot water showers at the end of the day.

Car camps are especially suitable for people who have camper trailers or small caravans, and for those who don’t like staying in a small tent, and sleeping on an air bed or sleeping mat.

This is compared to full pack walks, where you have to carry everything you need for the weekend on your back. Needless to say, pack walks are more “spartan” as far as luxury and convenience go - however they do allow you to get to areas you would not be able to reach by car or easy walking.

Examples of areas suitable for car camps (and ones we have visited) include Mulligans Hut (Gibraltar Range N.P). Station Creek, Fairweather Farm, Nightcap N.P. Trial Bay, Kwiambal N.P, The Gorge, Point Lookout (New England N.P), Cathedral Rock N.P, Border Ranges N.P. and many others.

Roughing it! Our Christmas Dinner at Fairweather Farm. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it.

Our Christmas car camp at Fairweather Farm 2011, most of us camped, some stayed in the cabins.

Another interesting car camp location, Dorrigo Rainforest Resort 2010.

The Christmas car camp 2009 at Station Creek. Kayaking, swimming, walking. Not a bad spot to spend a few days.
